There are six classes in our Middle team. Two are straight Year 2 classes and four are composite Year 3 and 4 classes. A key priority of teaching and learning at this level is to build on the literacy and numeracy success children have had in the Junior Team.
Children in this team are expected to be more independent and participate in -
MATH CROSS GROUPING:
Children are grouped across the team according to their ability.
TEAM TIME:
A focus at this level is to not only encourage children to positively identify with themselves but also as part of a team through activities such as Jump Jam fitness sessions and singing.
SPORTING AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES:
Children learn the fundamentals of team sports, cultural activities and participate in weekly competitions. A number of children begin to play a musical instrument and sing in the Middle Team choir. Many more sporting options are available at this age.
ELECTIVES: Years 3&4
At least twice a year children opt into an elective for the duration of a term. Often a showcase is held at the conclusion of the term to share what has been achieved. Electives provide many opportunities for children to independently set goals practising and reinforcing the Key Competencies of the New Zealand Curriculum in authentic contexts.
DISCOVERY TIME: Year 2
Children are encouraged to explore a variety of learning situations, from working with wood to exploring visual art using a range of materials. Teacher led goal setting and reflection relating to the New Curriculum Key Competencies are a major focus of this time.
CULTURAL SWAP TIME:
On Wednesday afternoons all children have the opportunity to take part in Art, Recorder, Folk Dance, Dance, Drama, Tikanga & Culture and P.E. as a rotation.
