It is my absolute pleasure to welcome you to George Street Normal School.
George Street Normal School:
is centrally located in Dunedin
has a close proximity to the University of Otago and the Dunedin Public Hospital
welcomes children from all over Dunedin and from many different parts of the world
accepts enrolments from International Students and is an incredibly culturally diverse school. We celebrate the richness this brings and purposefully weave our students culture into our curriculum so that we can all learn from one another.
is a place where we are working hard to honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi
Our Vision / Values:
Our vision is...
Inspiring children to Think, Thrive and Create
we want our children to be actively involved in their learning and to learn to think in many different ways. This includes developing the ability to think for themselves, to think analytically, divergently, creatively and critically. Using these skills helps our children to make better sense of the world around them, solve problems, make logical choices and to develop their own belief systems.
we have a strong focus on helping children our children to thrive. Our children are given the opportunity to thrive academically, socially and emotionally. We use a strengths based philosophy wherein we partner with the child and their whānau in identifying the child's strengths and provide opportunities for each child to work in this space and to thrive. The uniqueness of each child is valued and their strengths are valued.
we recognise the importance of The Arts and the way they contribute towards our overall wellbeing. Our children have lots of opportunities to experience the richness and creativity of The Arts through dance, drama, visual art and music. This contributes to their overall ability to thrive as a young person. In addition our children get to learn using a variety of technological devices and rather than just use them, we want them to be able to create on them in ways 'unplugged' technology does not allow.
we have a three values (Manaakitanga, Kaitiakitanga, Whanaungatanga) that underpin the way we interact with others to help us to become 'the best we can be'
Our school whakatauki
Kia mau te aka matua i te piki e muri ake nei
This whakatauki was gifted to our school and we are beginning to lean into the meaning of this for ourselves as part of our journey of understanding Te ao Māori.
Opportunities for our students:
access to a fantastic array of learning opportunities within their classroom programmes and extracurricular activities
we utilise our local environment; children learn about their world and experience trips to our local marae, museums, gardens, sporting venues etc.
we have Kapa haka and Pasifika groups available for all children
during break times, there are a huge number of activities on offer such as kaitiaki club, robotics, Lego, chess club, structured play, Jump Jam and a large number of sporting codes
