Strength-based Learning
We use a 'strengths-based' teaching and learning approach to enhance student learning. In our school every children are encouraged to:
identify their strengths
use their strengths (e.g. within class programmes, electives classes, clubs, music tuition and sports)
develop their strengths.
At the beginning of the year, we hold a Whānau wānaka wherein the teacher 'meets the parent and meets the child'. This is a way of flipping traditional 'meet-the-teacher' nights so that whānau have an opportunity to share with kaiako (teachers) their own and their child's aspirations and uniqueness.
Our beliefs:
strengths-based learning links to learning dispositions such as motivation, engagement, self-belief and confidence
wellbeing accompanies student achievement
children who have regular opportunities to develop their strengths are more likely to flourish.
"Everyone at school, students and teachers have made me feel really happy about myself. They make me shine and congratulate me when I've done well or even if I tried my hardest.' - from one of our students.
