ESOL Programme

Annyeonghaseyo, Selamat siang, Ni hao, Assalamu alaikum, Namaste, Bonjour, Konnichiwa, Kia Orana, Ayubowan, Marhaba, Hyālō, Chào, Olá, Salām, Malo e lelei, Privet, Talofa

are but some of the greetings you may hear at George Street Normal School.

We are proud of the multicultural nature of our school and have a well-integrated ELL (English Language Learner) programme. The programme is designed to support and scaffold learning to cater for all students including:

• ELL trained Teacher Assistants who work with small groups of children

• Individual progress tracking for ELLs

• Individual goals/next steps are reported to parents on the child's school report

• A designated teacher has responsibility for overseeing the ELL programme

• Some of our teachers have completed further ESOL study

• Professional development, strong collegial support and comprehensive resources for all staff involved

• Cluster meetings between schools to share strengths and tools

• Nessie, a web-based literacy tool available to our children both in school and in their home

• New children are given both cultural and logistical orientation

• Families are invited to share in their children's learning  and meet socially with others
